Screening and Prevention of Hepatitis B Virus Reactivation During Chemotherapy.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is common across the world. Infection can lead to significant morbidity from cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. An estimated 240 million people have chronic (hepatitis B surface antigen [HBsAg]-positive) HBV infection.[1] As a result of increasing immigration from highly endemic areas (eg, China, Southeast Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe), the prevalence of c...

Reactivation of Hepatitis B Virus: Inactive Carriers and Occult Infection

In recent years the group of inactive carriers and that of occult hepatitis B virus infection could become a main concern due to their epidemiological and clinical significance. At present, our top priority consists of identifying, prophylaxis and monitoring of these patients undergoing immunosuppressive treatment. This report describes hepatitis B virus reactivation in the two patients in diff...

Hepatitis B virus persistence after recovery from acute viral hepatitis.

Contrary to current opinion, the disappearance of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) from the serum, the development of anti-HBs antibodies, and normalization of liver function may not reflect complete virological recovery from acute hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. By using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), in the current study we demonstrate long-term persistence of HBV DNA in the serum...

Reactivation of hepatitis B.

Reactivation of hepatitis B refers to the abrupt increase in hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication in a patient with inactive or resolved hepatitis B. Reactivation can occur spontaneously, but more typically is triggered by immunosuppressive therapy of cancer, autoimmune disease, or organ transplantation. Reactivation can be transient and clinically silent, but often causes a flare of disease tha...

Hepatitis B Virus Reactivation During Successful Treatment of Hepatitis C Virus With Sofosbuvir and Simeprevir.

Treatment of hepatitis C virus with potent, interferon-free, direct-acting antiviral regimens with no activity against hepatitis B virus (HBV) may increase the risk for HBV reactivation in coinfected patients. We present 2 cases of HBV reactivation during treatment with an all-oral regimen of simeprevir and sofosbuvir and discuss strategies to prevent HBV flare.
